Taylor Elementary Annual Olympic Games

For the past couple of months students at Taylor Elementary have been learning about ancient civilizations and as of late students have been actively learning about ancient Rome and Greece. The original Ancient Olympic Games were a series of athletic competitions held between various city-states of Ancient Greece every four years. They began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, and were celebrated until 393 AD.

The teachers and students of Taylor Elementary donned ancient apparel togas and crowns of gold in memory of the original Olympic Games. Students and teachers competed in events that would test their physical and mental strength. Sixth grade students entered the school in grand parade in front of a packed audience of Kindergarten through fifth grade students accompanied by countless parents and faculty members. Students from all grades participated in a torch run and the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic Calderon. Some of the events include Discuss (paper plate), Javelin (straw), Ice Hockey, and the event culminates with a grand chariot race that resembles a scene out of the Hollywood Classic Ben Her. Fortunately, with the aid of Mr. Wilson heroic efforts all participates and audiences’ members were left unscathed.

Many gold, silver, and bronze ribbons were awarded to both student and teacher. The Students cleaned house this year with many students receiving the majority of the metals.

The teachers and students would like to thank the variety of teachers and parents who donated their time and efforts to bring these events to life.
