Taylor Elementary Holds Olympics

Taylor sixth-grade and faculty competed in the fifth annual Olympic Games. The student body was treated to the thrills and spills of Taylor's very own version of the Oympics.  Sixth-grade students have been studying about early civilzations beginning with early man, moving up to ancient Egypt, and the Nile River Valley.  For the past month, students have been learing about the origins of democracy and the ancient Olympic Games. The Taylor Olympics is the culminating event which incorporates skill and ideals of ancient Greece and with the ideals of today.  Students are placed in teams with names of city states of ancient Greece; such as Athens, Delphi and Olympus.  The students create a team flag that incorporates the theme of the ancient city state with the theme of the student teams today.  The day of the Olympics is filled with excitement and preparations. Dressed in school-appropriate togas, student participated in an athlete's parade and ceremonial torch relay and cauldron lighting.  Keeping with the tradition of lighting the caludron;. this year's torch bearers were Zane Jolley, Moriah Bulow and Josh Cowden who were representing each sixth grade class.  Students and faculty then competed in a variety of modified sports including the javelin (straw), Long Jump (step), Hockey (potato flip), and many other exciting events.  The day's events concluded witht the main event, the Chariot Race (rolling chars) and an awards presentation.  Teachers and students cheered and applauded everyone's efforts.  Despite the spills from both students and teachers, namely, Mr. Mike Adams, everything went without a hitch.  The ancient Olympians would say, "Citius! Altius! Fortius!"
